Which 5 Knives Do You Need To Cut Vegetables
Preparing vegetables is definitely one of the most frequent tasks you will undertake in the kitchen, and having the right equipment for the job is key in making sure this type of meal preparation is satisfying and enjoyable, rather than feeling like a chore.
The knives you use in the kitchen make all the difference, and different knives are better for different tasks. With that in mind, we thought we would run you through five key knives that you might want to make sure you have to hand the next time you’re cutting vegetables.
In this guide:
- The Intro
- Chef’s Knife
- Paring Knife
- Peeler
- Bread Knife or Serrated Knife
- Santoku Knife
Chef’s Knife
A chef’s knife is the most useful knife of all in the kitchen, and just about all of the most common tasks involved with food preparation can be done with a chef’s knife.
This is certainly true when it comes to preparing vegetables. A chef’s knife is ideal for cutting, slicing, chopping, dicing, and even jobs like mincing garlic.
Having a good quality chef’s knife is probably the most important thing you can do when it comes to being set up for food preparation, so spend time choosing one that really suits you. It should be comfortable in your hand, and well balanced, so trying out different knives in person is good practice if you’re able.
You should also choose a knife that is made from a material that is durable enough to not require constant sharpening, as this will be your most used knife. Avoid stainless steel, and aim for tougher materials like ceramic or carbon steel.
Paring Knife
Paring knives are great for lots of vegetable related tasks, such as peeling, trimming, and more delicate slicing.
They are very good for small and precise tasks, and offer a little more control than a chef’s knife when it comes to dealing with small vegetables and fiddly tasks.
Choose a paring knife when you need to focus more on details, or when a chef’s knife would be too cumbersome for the job.
Peeler
A peeler is one of the more basic, yet ultimately essential pieces of kit you’ll need in the kitchen when it comes to cooking with vegetables.
From carrots to potatoes and a whole host of other vegetables, whilst a paring knife can be used for this task, a peeler is often preferred by chefs.
Not only are peelers necessary but they are also one of the more affordable pieces of kitchen equipment, giving you no excuse not to have one or two in your drawer!
Bread Knife or Serrated Knife
It may sound surprising, but a bread knife is actually the perfect tool for cutting soft and juicy fruits and vegetables, like tomatoes.
The scalloped edge allows you to make very smooth and clean slices without crushing whatever it is you’re cutting through, which is what makes them so perfect for cutting bread and cakes, but it also applies to other delicate things too.
Santoku Knife
A Santoku knife is a Japanese style of knife that has hollow depressions along the edge which prevent food from sticking to the knife. Quite often when you are chopping vegetables with a chef’s knife, the slices will then stick to the blade afterwards, but this is not so much of a problem with a Santoku knife.
If this is something that tends to bother you when preparing vegetables, then you might want to think about investing in a Santoku knife as well as a good chef’s knife. A Santoku knife is great for many of the same tasks such as dicing, slicing, mincing and chopping.
You will probably still find yourself reaching for your chef’s knife a lot, especially if you are cutting through something hard, but the two together are a great team when it comes to preparing vegetables.
We hope this has given you a little bit more insight into the different knives that are particularly useful for the preparation of vegetables.
